2 Timothy 1:1-18 NIV
[1]
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, [2] To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. [3] I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. [4] Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. [5] I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. [6] For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. [7] For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. [8] So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. [9] He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, [10] but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. [11] And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. [12] That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day. [13] What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. [14] Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. [15] You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. [16] May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. [17] On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. [18] May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.
This chapter is actually the beginning of a letter Paul sent to Timothy to remind Him to keep steadfast and to guard his faith in God.
(6)I think it's significant that Paul had laid hands on Timothy and through that a gift was deposited in him. I remember I used to wonder why the majority of Pastors laid hands but when I read my bible, I see so many instances where the Apostles or Followers of Christ laid hands for impartation and the likes but that's a topic for another day.
(7)Verse 7 is my favourite verse! It says; For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline"
So the next time you're going to preach the gospel, remember this verse. God does not make us fearful or timid. His Spirit gives us POWER, love and self discipline.
You're struggling with consistency? Remember, God's Spirit gives us self discipline. If only you'll surrender and let Him establish His work in you!
(8)Paul tells Timothy not to be ashamed of the gospel, to be bold about his faith. I think this applies to so many Christians these days, including me. Especially me!😂
I find it so hard to walk up to people to preach. I often tell myself that it's because I'm just shy but then again, it's a lie I tell myself. I shouldn't be shy to tell people about the greatest opportunity. If I'm not shy to advertise my business, I shouldn't be shy to preach the gospel.
(9 &10)One thing Paul always emphasises on is Grace. And I think it's so important. A lot of Christians think Jesus loves them because they're sinless or moral but it's not true. If Jesus only loves us for what we do, then his Sacrifice on the cross would be useless.
He loves us for His own purpose and Grace! So the next time you think you've lost God's love because you sinned, remember it's a lie from the enemy. What you lost is your purity and you can get it back, just by going back to God.
Grace has been given to us since the beginning of time. It has been revealed now through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality.
Can you just take a pause and say "Thank you Jesus"? Honestly, He's worthy of it all.
(12) Paul was suffering for Christ but he didn't care. Because he knew who he was following. He trusted in God.
Persevere and submission to God is one thing that was evident throughout Paul's life. And it brought a lot of people to God.
(13&14) Paul tells Timothy to guard what has been entrusted in Him through the Holy Spirit. And to keep the pattern of his teachings.
So, Paul thanks Onesiphorus and prays for him for his help. Apparently, he searched everywhere for Paul till he found him, wasn't ashamed of his chains and took care of him.
I think it's important that we are always kind. You never know how far it will go.
